I know this is an entry for the Vanderbilt Planetarium, but that’s only a part of the museum. The planetarium is cool, but the main feature to see here is the mansion. It’s built in the Spanish Revival style and was constructed over the course of three decades in the early 20th century. The house is not only a fantastic bit of architecture, but also exhibits some very intriguing collections (like the “Hall of Fishes” which is housed in the museum on the grounds). The red tiled roofs and the elegant grounds will make you feel like you’ve stepped into another time and place—this mansion really belongs somewhere along the Mediterranean Sea and seems quite out of place on Long Island!
There are some wonderful events hosted in the Vanderbilt Mansion. Last year I went to the Holiday Dinner. It was expensive (like $100 for me and another $100 for my date), but well worth it. The money goes to the preservation of the mansion and the operation of the planetarium and other features and events, and you get to spend the evening taking a tour of the mansion, all decked out for Christmas. I highly recommend this experience to anyone.

The Vanderbilt Planetarium is where I take my kids occasionally and they love their shows each time. We camp on the landscaped gardens nearby and have a great snack before heading back home. I highly recommend this place to be an informative entertainment place in Long Island.
