We moved my mother into The Bristal because she has some health problems and sometimes needs emergency care. She's still capable of doing a lot of stuff on her own however. This decision didn't sit well with her in the beginning, but as the months have gone by, she says it's actually increased her independence.
Lots of services are included as part of her rent which she would otherwise have to pay extra for or do on her own. This includes laundry, housekeeping, etc. There is emergency response in every room if it's needed. She has a lot more peace of mind, as do we, and with the little chores made easier by the staff, she has more time and energy to do things which are important to her.
As far as the atmosphere goes, it's pretty pleasant, and it doesn't have that stale feeling that a lot of retirement homes have. It's a lot like a luxury hotel. Another great thing which has come out of this decision is that mom has a lot more friends now. It gets nearly impossible to meet new people as you get older, but in a communal situation like this, she has plenty of people to talk to and have fun with.
