Amidst the power outtages, the broken homes, those waiting in line for gas, and other tragic stories in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, there is a lot of good things too. I love it when I can turn away from the frustration and anger and see love and communities bonding together. This is what I saw from some very dutiful students caring for a dog.
Students from a Staten Island school raised money to support New York pet charity organization, Frankie's Friends, and the funds they raised have helped pay for surgery on a dog named Bruno, who was injured after evacuating from his home that was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy.
These students, from Elias Bernstein Intermediate School 7, banded together and they raised more than $1,300 for Frankie’s Friends by sponsoring about 20 teachers that ran in a 5k race that was held just a few hours before Hurricane Sandy made landfall.
This is nothing new to the students or the teachers of the school. They routinely look for different ways that the can give back to their community as they look for creative ways to serve. After a recent incident in which their principal’s dog required surgery, the school decided to raise money for Frankie’s Friends, which helps families who otherwise could not afford life-saving emergency care for their pet.
Now, the students have helped "Bruno". After evacuating their home, which was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy, Bruno, his “dad,” and another family dog have been living in their car. However, he Staffordshire bull terrier got loose and was subsequently hit by a car. Bruno then underwent sugery at BluePearl Veterinary Partners in Queens to repair a complex fracture to his front left leg.
What a great cause and a great determination by the students and teachers at the schoo. Let's hpe that we can see other inspiring types of stories coming out of the devastation of just a few weeks ago.
