There is a glimmer of hope in the wake of the devastation of Hurricane Sandy and the destruction that Long Island suffered in her path. While we are now two weeks after the fact of the storm, it still seems like time has stood still for many families who are displaced from their damaged homes, those who are still suffering without power, food, or clothing, and those who are still trying to dig out their basements and first floors of their homes and businesses. But, there is a glimmer of hope.
Two weeks after the superstorm has ravaged the Northeast, recovery is underway, but some of these residents are currently living in a precarious situation, in homes without power or heat. In these communities, the certainty of having access to a warm meal is a welcomed relief.
Whitsons Emergency Dining has been working with the American Red Cross and the New York City's Human Resources Administration to provide nutritious meals to affected areas immediately after the storm hit. Together with the American Red Cross, Whitsons has been able to provide over 330,000 meals to New York, especially in Suffolk County and Nassau County.
Though the storm is two weeks in the past, the recovery process is still underway, and in many cases just getting started. According to Kelly Friend, Sr. VP of Operations at Whitsons, “Hurricane Sandy has disrupted lives and destroyed homes in so many communities. For anyone severely affected by this extreme event, the certainty of knowing where your next meal is coming from is an important step back to normalcy. We are committed to doing everything we can to help these communities through this difficult time.”
Whitsons continues to serve both hot and cold meals in several locations throughout Long Island through the help of many staff and volunteers.
