The Christmas season is upon us and many companies are gearing up for their big sales or for employee holiday parties. However, this year's Christmas season is taking a little bit of a different twist on Long Island as companies look to helping with the recovery effort rather than keeping the holiday cheer to themselves.
Dress for Success, a nonprofit that helps women find work, is giving up its annual lunch and manicure to throw 40 kids in the Rockaways a Dec. 13 party featuring Hot 97’s Street Team.
Suzanne Elliott, the charity’s chief operating officer said, “We’re in the business of giving back, and we wanted to help. We put together a fun evening for them with gifts, music and the opportunity to escape.”
This opportunity is sure to be just exactly what the community needs.
Long Island’s St. Francis Hospital also nixed a holiday party and instead delivered a $75,000 feast of turkey, ham and mashed potatoes to 700 Long Beach residents, with the leftovers sent to area soup kitchens and churches.
That’s not to say employers who party on are being selfish.
There is a lot to be said about a Christmas party. There is a tremendous boost to the overall morale of the company as employers and employees come together for a bit of fun. All the better when the party is now focused to help those who have been displaced and hit hard by Hurricane Sandy.
