There is nothing like the holliday season to spur up a lot of community goodwill. In a move towards filling the gap with local charities trying to help out families for Thanksgiving meals, Island Harvest has partnered with Panera Bread to help those hit hard by Hurricane Sandy and Long Islanders who are hungry.
With Thanksgiving just six days away, there are many families hoping for some sort of normalcy during some of their hardest times of life. As a way of showing community charity and help, Panera Bread will serve as a designated drop-off site for Island Harvest’s annual Turkey & Trimmings Collection Campaign, a lifeline for many families in need in the aftermath of Sandy and for hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders who struggle to put food on the table.
In order to help out these families, Panera Bread is asking for the community to help in this. They are putting out the call for people to lend a helping hand and donate frozen turkeys, supermarket turkey coupons and non-perishable food items at any of its 22 Long Island bakery-cafes on or before December 24th.
Greg George, Vice President of Operations for Panera Bread on Long Island said recently, “Donations of frozen turkeys, turkey coupons and non-perishable food items will be welcomed at our bakery-cafes in Nassau and Suffolk now through December 24th, and can be dropped off as early as 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. These donations will help Island Harvest provide warm, nutritious meals to local families in need throughout the holidays.”
As Long Island continues to struggle with the hand that they have been dealt, it is heartwarming to see both community residents and businesses come together to help.
