it has been a rough year for the Long Island Metropolitan Transit Authority. They have had to implement two different fare hikes in order to keep up with their budget, and they had several problems associated with power outages, due to the storms, and recovering from damages sustained through Hurricane Sandy. For commuters in Long Island, these price hikes, power outages, and lines still being rebuilt have caused plenty of problems for themselves. Increased gas prices have hampered their own budgets, and the increased fares have made it much tougher for working families to commute.
However, there may be some type of relief coming in the form of federal aid for the MTA. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is set to receive nearly $200 million in federal aid to help with Superstorm Sandy recovery. Governor Andrew Cuomo says Wednesday the Federal Transit Administration and the Federal Emergency Management Agency funding will go to cover costs associated with storm preparation through January 29.
