When it comes to life on Long Island we like to think that nothing can touch us and we persevere through the worst that Mother Nature, or anything else can throw at us. While Long Islanders are doing their best to rebuild after Hurricane Sandy destroyed many communities, homes and businesses, one major event may cripple the process. Gas prices.
If you have been driving around Long Island over the weekend you may have noticed that gas prices have risen quite dramatically. This is not good for individuals or businesses on Long Island. In fact, several reports show that Long Island has the highest gas prices in the country.
As of this morning, the average price of gas on Long Island has risen almost 15 cents a gallon to $3.83. This is, by several surveys taken over the weekend, the most expensive gas in the country. After several months of gas going on a decline, the upward trend has been caused by a shortage of crude oil to refine. This is not welcome news in any area of the country, let alone Long Island. With a shortage of food, high gas prices, and homes that are still in different stages of repair, there are hurdles at every turn.
However, true to our Long Island heritage, the people here will persevere through this latest hurdle. It will be interesting to see how businesses react to this upward spike in gas if it continues for any length of time.
