If it wasn't enough that residents of Long Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut had to endure the onslaught of Hurricane Sandy as it swept through with high winds and devastating floods, now citizens have to endure a congressional stall program. It is hard to believe that we are now more than two months after hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses in the tristate area were destroyed or damaged by Hurricane Sandy, and Republicans in the House of Representatives intentionally killed the $60 billion bill passed by the Senate by refusing to bring it to a vote on New Year’s Day. This is a shameful act.
President Obama is also speaking up as he said in a written statement that many people in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are trying to recover from the storm and need “immediate support with the bulk of winter still in front of us.”
Obama’s statements come as New York lawmakers are lashing out at a decision by House GOP leaders not to hold a vote in the current Congress. Rep. Tim Bishop, D-Southampton, blasted Republican lawmakers today after House Speaker John Boehner pulled the bill on Tuesday.
The people who are still recovering in these states elected our representatives to be a voice in getting help for times such as this. But, in the final hours of 2012, with the fiscal cliff looming, lawmakers saw fit to waste their time on drywall safety, the Frank Buckles WWI Memorial, to Redesignate Neil A. Armstrong Flight Research Center and Hugh L. Dryden Test Range, and a Conveyance of certain property in Kotzebue, AK. Well done congress.
Perhaps they do not have any houses along the eastern coast where people are living in damaged homes, unopened schools, closed hospitals, and debris laying all over communities.
