I got a small storage unit here a number of years ago, and for the first couple of years, it all seemed like it was okay to me. I moved out of state on business for a while, and I was pretty happy with the rent and the service. But they started jacking up my rates, and eventually I realized they were doing to be doing it every single year, to the day. I thought that was really lame, considering that it's not like inflation happens with that level of regularity. Clearly they do it just to get more money out of people they know aren't available to move their stuff out and find a new storage unit. It's a telltale sign when you look up rates on new units at other storage places (or the same one) and find that of course, those rates are way lower.

So I paid more and more and more until I was able to finally come back to town for the year. I am moving my stuff to another storage facility, where, of course, I can expect the same crap to happen again. But at least I can start over at the bottom of the rate scale again before I am forced to start climbing back up again.

This sort of behavior is a plague among storage facility operators. I did some research and it really is deliberate! They do it by design. You can find them talking about it on message boards. It's just disgusting.
