Our basement had been through a number of bad episodes over the past year with all the crappy weather, and it was starting to seem damp in there all the time, and there was that mildew-y smell everywhere. Then my son started feeling sick every time he was down there, so we called in Flood Control to perform a test for toxic mold. They found some and helped us get rid of it, and then set about waterproofing and making other improvements to prevent more damage. We later installed a dehumidifier, which was very costly, but at least now we know our basement will be less likely to accumulate mold again. The guys who helped us from Flood Control said we need to be constantly vigilant to prevent the formation of new mold and keep water from damaging our walls and other parts of the basement.
