“Chip’s Army” to Host Blood Drive in Memory of Charles “Chip” Pannhorst
Local Community Members Issue Call for Blood Donors
Members of “Chip’s Army” and the American Red Cross will join together for a special blood drive on Saturday, August 25, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the American Legion at 10 Bruce Street in West Babylon, N.Y. This blood drive is in memory of Charles “Chip” Pannhorst.
Chip’s Army was formed after Chip Pannhorst was diagnosed with leukemia in June 2011. During his first few weeks of treatments, friends and family members began reaching out asking what they could do to help. Chip’s sister, Tobey Thurston, created a website to raise money for his medical expenses by selling t-shirts and tote bags. The response was so overwhelming that on June 14, Chip’s family decided to set up the Charles Pannhorst Living Trust, also known as Chip’s Army.
Chip’s family and friends stood by his side throughout his sickness and on April 17, 2012, Chip passed away in his home surrounded by family. Chip truly felt the love of his “Army” until the very end. From Chip’s diagnosis in June 2011 until his memorial service, Chip’s Army raised $15,000 for his medical expenses. It was Chip’s dream to beat leukemia and transform Chip’s Army into a non-profit organization. He wanted the organization to continue to raise money to help others facing leukemia, the way he was helped. Together Chip’s family and friends are on a mission to help lead his Army to the next level, fulfilling Chip’s dream.
Donating blood is a profound act that helps save lives. Approximately every two seconds, a patient in the United States needs blood. That’s why your blood donation through the Red Cross is so important. A blood donation may help save up to three lives and it only takes about an hour of time. It is the blood on the shelves today that helps save lives tomorrow. The American Red Cross is urging all eligible donors to help keep the blood supply strong this summer by making an appointment to donate blood today by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or by visiting redcrossblood.org.
