The annual “Buckle Up New York” campaign begins today. It is part of the nationwide “Click It or Ticket” campaign that brings together law enforcement from coast to coast. It goes from May 20th to June 2nd and means that there will be additional patrols and seatbelt checkpoints.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner, Ed Webber, said, “Fastening your seat belt takes seconds and it can save your life. We have seen first-hand the deadly consequences of what happens when someone chooses not to buckle up.”
According to the New York Department of Motor Vehicles, New York State has a seat belt compliance rate of 90 or better for the past three years. That doesn’t mean that the campaign is not needed, however, as there are still those who need to buckle up.
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that fifty-two percent of the 21,253 passengers killed in 2011 were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. This number is one that needs to go down significantly.
New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law holds the drivers responsible for any passengers under the age of 16 who are not wearing seatbelts.
So be sure you and all your passengers put their seatbelts on during this time and every time you get into the car and start it up.
