On Tuesday, a crowd of hundreds of Long Islanders gathered in Babylon for the groundbreaking ceremony for Wyandanch Rising. Wyandanch Rising is a community revitalization project. Project designers envision a transformation of the run-down, economically broken area of downtown Babylon into a cleaner, friendlier, and enlivened community. The effort will focus on a number of tasks. A new, sanitary sewage system will be installed, the Straight Path will be re-aligned and beautified, and there will also be a new zoning code which will create a better organizational scheme for businesses and residences in the area.
Commercial, public, and private residential projects will all be developed in the area so that the space can serve a number of purposes and offer convenience to all. The first apartment building planned will include 91 residential units. It is estimated that the revitalization project will create 150 new jobs for community members. The groundbreaking ceremony is a big deal, because it means that the project is finally going forward after a long period of planning and fundraising. Residents of Wyandanch are excited to have a chance to make a comeback. Even though the area has suffered, many people are interested in moving back in and starting a new future.
