William Floyd School District Hosts New Teacher Institute, Community Bus Tour

MASTIC BEACH, NY, August 30, 2013 – The William Floyd School District recently held its New Teacher Institute, a three-day workshop for the district’s non-tenured teachers who are entering their first, second, third or fourth year at William Floyd. The three-day event was highlighted by a bus tour throughout the community for faculty members and administrators.

During the two-hour tour, participants visited nearby locations including the William Floyd Estate, former home of William Floyd one of the nation’s founding fathers and signer of the Declaration of Independence, the Flight 800 Memorial at Smith’s Point, the Revolutionary War Cemetery, the district’s eight schools – many of which are named after important historical figures – and the residential neighborhoods where students resides.

“The bus tour is important because it provides our teachers with an understanding of the deep and rich history of the William Floyd community,” said Kevin Coster, Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education, William Floyd School District. “It also gives them an opportunity to see the communities where their students come from.”

Teachers also participated in three days of professional development seminars covering such topics as the “New York State Common Core Domain and Module,” the “Revised NYSUT Rubric,” “How to go from a 3 to a 4” and more.
