WATERFRONT WARRIORS WELCOME SOLDIERS TO LONG JULY 20-26;
5K RUN AND WELCOME PARADE SUNDAY, JULY 22
Long Beach, NY – July 17, 2012 - The Long Beach Waterfront Warriors, a volunteer organization that assists wounded, ill and injured soldiers, will welcome soldiers and their families to the City by the Sea this week for some much deserved rest and relaxation. From July 20 through July 26, the families will enjoy our
beaches,
boat rides,
biking on the boardwalk, learning how to
surf, playing
volleyball and attending the City’s free summer concert series. A trip to New York City is also planned.
“This is the fourth year that the
Long Beach community will welcome military families,” said LBWW Co-chair Gerry Snell. “The week starts off on Sunday with a 5K Run for the Warriors on the boardwalk at 8AM and a Welcome Parade in the West End beginning at 3PM, followed by a barbecue at
Long Beach Catholic Regional School. We hope everyone will come out and wave their flags for these heroes.”
Volunteers will be on hand to assist with activities, meals and
accommodations, with many opening their homes to the families. Proceeds from LBWW events held at Lola’s and the Inn in Long Beach and Latitude’s in NYC along with other fundraising efforts will help support the trip to Long Beach.
“The local community has been very generous in their support of the soldiers’ annual trip and in support of other services the LBWW’s provide,” said Co-Chair John McLaughlin. A portion of monies collected are used for shipping holiday packages to soldiers overseas; transporting parents of wounded soldiers recuperating at Water Reed National Military Medical Center; and for funding emergency medical help and other needs.
“We are committed to the young men and women who are sacrificing so much to protect our freedom,” added Snell. “We want them to know we appreciate all they do for us, and that we will never forget them.” He added that volunteers have found getting to know the families is a truly rewarding experience.
The Long Beach Waterfront Warriors organization welcomes your support and invites all to join them in making this year’s visit even more memorable than last year.
Visit us on the boardwalk at the LB Historical Society Arts & Crafts Festival August 25 & 26!
