WAITERS COMPETE FOR LOCAL CHARITY
A New Spectator Sport Comes to Greenport
The Great Waiter Race will make its debut in Greenport on Sunday, April 15, 2012 at 10 am. The Market, located at 44 Front Street, is hosting this unique event for its 25th Anniversary celebration. Proceeds will benefit health and wellness activities at Eastern Long Island Hospital.
The rules are simple. Waiters must reach a finish line by walking as fast as possible while balancing a stemmed glass on a serving tray. The contents of the glass will be provided by BodyArmor, the maker of a natural energy drink.
“As the owner of a health food market since 1987, I believe we can all be our ‘best’ through good nutrition and regular exercise,” says Shelley Scoggin. “I invite everyone to get involved just for the ‘health’ of it. We are very fortunate to have ELIH at the heart of our community, providing top-rated care.”
The Great Waiter Race is based on a traditional race that began in Paris in 1904 to recognize the hospitality industry. The concept has grown in popularity since its early beginnings. Races now take place in more than 750 cosmopolitan cities around the world. (www.waitersrace.com)
An entry fee of $50 is required and must be received no later than 5 pm on April 14, 2012. Participants are encouraged to raise additional funds. All monies raised will be divided between
Eastern Long Island Hospital and the winner of the race. The monitored race will kick-off at the ELIH Opportunity Shop on Main Street and end in front of The Market. For more information, contact The Market, 631.477.8803.
Eastern Long Island Hospital, Suffolk’s first voluntary hospital, was established in 1905. ELIH is a 90-bed, acute-care Hospital with a mission to provide essential healthcare services to the residents of the North Fork and Shelter Island. Recognized for excellence again and again, ELIH is the recipient of the Outstanding Patient Experience Award by HealthGrades.TM
