There is just something special about taking part in the events that surround the Special Olympics. This is especially true for the Long Island Spring Games of the Special Olympics on April 21. Each year many volunteers are needed for the event, and hundreds pour out with the great intention of giving up their time to bring joy into these special athletes lives. And, finding joy themselves.
This year, in order to get things ready, Commack residents are being asked to give up a day or afternoon to spend with some of Long Island's most determined athletes. Commack School District will be welcoming more than 400 athletes from Long Island, New York City and Hudson Valley and will need those great volunteers to start thinking about making the commitment.
The 2013 Spring Games North has set up a website allowing online registration where residents can volunteer to assist in running the track and field and tennis events. Volunteers may be asked to help set up or break down the event, help with the Opening Ceremonies, keep score during a match or assist in the staging of athletes.
Volunteers can up for an all-day shift from 8 a.m. to noon. Some volunteer tasks include assisting with set up, organization and handing out of awards; setting up an activity booth in the Olympic Village; or helping with the shotput or turbo javelin events. Of course, if you can not give a full day of your time, any amount of time would be greatly appreciated.
Start thinking about how you can be a help in this great event and see how much fun you end up having!
