Smithtown, NY - September 23, 2014 - Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta joined members of the Sgt. John Cooke VFW Post 395 St. James in presenting an award banner and a certificate of appreciation to Uncle Giuseppe’s Market Place in Smithtown for letting the veterans conduct their “Buddy Poppy” drives throughout the year at the store.
The first Buddy Poppy Drive was held in 1922 and the poppy was adopted as the official memorial flower of the Veterans of Foreign War. The poppies are assembled by veterans in VA hospitals and sold to the VFW units to sell nationwide. The money raised goes back to the veterans who assembled them.
“I commend the members of the VFW Post for selling the poppies and helping their fellow veterans and the management of Uncle Giuseppe’s for supporting this program,” said Suffolk County Legislator Trotta.
