Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, the nationally renowned Long Island
summer arts day camp, continues to add new programs for its 46th, 2013 season. Most
programs at Usdan Center, more than 40 in music, dance, theater, visual arts, creative
writing, nature and ecology and chess, are open to all students within various age groups
with no audition needed. These include the successful, recently added “Fashion Design,”
“Book Illustration” and “Organic Gardening and Simple Food.”
New programs include: a Jazz and Tap Intensive, for 7th to 12th grades. Similar to Usdan’s
Ballet Intensive, this is for advanced dance students, and will include a full day of dance
study. There will also be a Select Chamber Choir, a minor class, by audition for grades 7 to
12, featuring small ensemble singing of jazz, classical and popular music. Another new
class will be Studio Art, for grades 5 to 12, including work in two and three- dimensional
media – drawings, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking and other forms.
These are in addition to Usdan’s other new, announced programs for 2013: a special three-
week session July 22-August 9 (in addition to the four and seven-week programs beginning
June 24); an expansion of the Center’s jazz program, encompassing three separate jazz
ensembles: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced, giving students more personalized
attention at their specific levels as well as increased opportunity for performance; and a
new “Technical Theatre” program for 10th to 12th grade students wishing to study theater
stage management and set construction (limited enrollment).
Usdan Center’s next, free Open Houses for the 2013 season will be on Wednesday
February 20 and Sunday February 24, each from 11 AM to 2 PM at Usdan’s magnificent
200-acre woodland campus. The Center, at 185 Colonial Springs Drive, Wheatley Heights
(Huntington) Long Island, features more than 40 programs in music, dance, theater, visual
arts, creative writing, nature and ecology and chess. For Open House information, contact
the Center at (631) 643-7900, or (212) 772-6060, visit www.usdan.com, or write to
At Sunday Open Houses, visitors are greeted at the Administration Building by faculty and
staff who introduce visitors to course options at Usdan, and also review the application
process. These greetings are followed by self-guided tours. Families who cannot make the
Open House may make arrangements for other days. For appointments for weekend or
weekday tours, call Gail London at (631) 643-7900.
Many of Usdan’s programs and special events, including excerpts from its August 1, 2012
Gala Concert, may now be viewed on the Center’s website, www.usdan.com. It is fully
coordinated with Usdan’s YouTube and Facebook sites, where additional information and
late-breaking news is also featured.
Future Open Houses will be on Sundays February 24, March 17, 2013, April 21, 2013 and
May 19, 2013. All Open Houses will be from 11 AM to 2 PM. Families who cannot
attend Open Houses may make appointments for other days.
Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, whose alumni include actors Natalie
Portman, Olivia Thirlby and Jackie Hoffman, and singers Jane Monheit and Mariah Carey,
has introduced the arts to more than 60,000 Tri-State Area children since its founding in
1968. The Center is open to all young people from age 6 to 18. No audition is needed for
most programs – rather, admission is based on an expression of interest in the arts. Each
summer, 1,600 students are transported to the Center in air-conditioned buses each day.
One-third of Usdan’s students attend on scholarship. Although the mission of the Center
is for every child to establish a relationship with the arts, the unique stimulation of the
Center has caused many to go on to arts careers. Alumni include members of Broadway
shows and major music, theater, and dance ensembles such as the Boston Pops and the
New York City Ballet. In addition to its regular programs, Usdan offers special
opportunities for advanced high school- age performing artists in music and dance. Usdan
Center is an agency of the UJA-Federation of New York. For more information, write to
