In a continuing downward journey for the US Postal Service, they have announced plans to dissolve their Saturday delivery of mail, but continue with package deliveries six days a week. The plan is said to save the embattled service over $2 billion annually. An official announcement is expected later Wednesday.
For several years now, the US Postal Service has fought hard to stay relevent in this day of technology and email. Through different types of promotions and flat rate deliveries, they have continued to be a part of life, but not truly relevant. This last moves shows that Long Island residents, as well as the rest of the country will have to wait over the weekend to receive any mail. However, the plan does allow for packages. The move accentuates one of the agency’s strong points — package delivery has increased by 14 percent since 2010.
Under the new plan, mail would be delivered to homes and businesses only from Monday through Friday, but would still be delivered to Long Island post office boxes on Saturdays. Post offices now open on Saturdays would remain open on Saturdays. This new plan is said to take affect in August at the earliest. But, there may be a snag.
It was not immediately clear how the service could eliminate Saturday mail without congressional approval. But the agency clearly thinks it has a majority of the American public on its side regarding the change. I am not so sure about that. People like to get their mail on time, especially if they are waiting for an important document or check.
