Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today wished the United States Merchan tMarine Academy a happy 70th birthday. The academy in Kings Point was founded on the 30th of September in 1943, and serves the same role for the Merchant Marines as West Point does for training new Army soldiers. The Merchant Marine service is often under-recognized, but they do contribute a critical role in the infrastructure of the United States, and the academy plays an essential role in preparing graduates to serve. “Members of the Merchant Marines have served New York and the United States both in foreign military conflicts and domestic emergency situations, and we are grateful for their service,” stated Cuomo.
The U.S. Merchant Marines are responsible for cargo and passenger transport during peacetime, but they also provide auxiliary services to the Navy during times of war. The Merchant Marines have served in every conflict that the US has been involved in since the second World War. After 9/11, the Merchant Marines helped to evacuate civilians to safe areas and transport supplies and personnel to and from Ground Zero. Graduates from the U.S. Merchant Marines may serve in any U.S. military branch, join the maritime industry as civilians, or work as licensed officers on U.S. flagged merchant ships.
