The Kellys and the Maroneys are two neighboring families who lived near Venetian Shores in Lindenhurst and became displaced by Superstorm Sandy. Last year, the Kellys' 8 year-old daughter, Keelynn, hosted a party surrounding the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards at her home. The party entailed an Orange Carpet entrance, voting in a voting booth, hair accessorizing, tattooing, slime-making, a performance by her band the Heavenly Angels and games like Sponge Bob Bingo before watching the Awards live on television with her friends and classmates. The Maroney family supplied pizza and ices for the children. The children had an amazing time. So much so, that many were asking when it would be held the following year.
Unfortunately, this year, the Kelly's became displaced by Superstorm Sandy and their house was in repair. The music stage and their instruments were all lost in the storm and they had no contents coverage on their flood insurance. Obviously they could not host the party. However, the Maroney's encouraged the Kellys to try to have the party for the sake of the children who all needed some form of relief and entertainment after what they had been through. They offered their help and together, both families made a commitment to host the party. The Kelly's daughter Keelynn invited her friends and classmates and the Maroney's 8 year old daughter Kali, invited hers. A local disaster relief organization got a hold of the invitation, gave it its endorsement and sent it to other displaced families with children. In a few short days, the families were receiving RSVPs from not only Lindenhurst, but also Babylon, Copaigue, Amityville Island Park and as far as the Rockaways.
In the Kellys and Maroney's local neighborhood, their were 112 families with elementary school children originally displaced from their homes. Some have returned back to their original homes, and still after almost five months. others still have not. Many of these families and their children have lost everything.
The party the two families are hosting will be held this Saturday, March 23rd beginning at 6:30pm at the newly remodeled Funzone on Broadhollow Road in Farmingdale. A VIP Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards room will be set up for all to attend at no charge and free admission. They enter into a voting booth with a lap top set up and cast their votes for their favorite nominees. (website: http://www.nick.com/kids-choice-awards/2013/vote). There, the children can watch the Kids Choice Awards live from 8:00PM to 9:30PM on Nickelodeon. While they watch the show, they will be offered snacks, and hot dogs and drinks courtesy Nathans Famous (next to Funzone) and pizza and ices courtesy Felicetti's Brothers Brick Oven Pizza in Lindenhurst, while witnessing the announcement of winners until 9:30PM. If the children want to play the games at Funzone, they can purchase a discounted bracelet or arcade game tokens.
The children can't wait. Afterall, they missed Halloween and barely got through the holidays. At present there will be at least 50 children who have confirmed they will be attending. After driving down to Venetian Shores yesterday, and seeing the continued flooding in the area, these children are well overdue for a nice fun time together!
