Christopher Capurso, 22, was arrested on April 19th for extortion, after police say that he went into commercial parking lots and posted his own “no parking signs” after cars were already parked. He enforced the signs illegally by towing parked vehicles, and demanded money from his victims to release their car.
Capurso is the owner and tow truck driver of Bumble Bee Towing. He was “holding cars hostage,” Floral Park Village Police say. His fraudulent signs said, “Customer/Tenant Parking Only 24 Hours – 7 Days a Week Unauthorized Vehicles Will be Towed at Owners Expense…Cars Released By Appointment Only.”
After putting up his signs in several locations, he hooked up parked vehicles to his tow truck and then waited for the owners to return. He then released the vehicles after the owners paid $150 to $200, and removed the signs.
Capurso has been charged with seven counts of grand larceny at this time, but the investigation is still ongoing, as there are still over a dozen complaints against Bumble Bee Towing that are similar in nature.
Capurso was released from jail on a $500 bond and his tow truck operator license has been revoked. He will appear in court on May 10th.
