In time for their 7th anniversary in Oyster Bay, a new Torah Scroll will be welcomed by the Chabad Jewish Learning Center on Sunday, June 9th.
Oyster Bay – The Torah scroll, one of the Jewish people's most sacred objects, has 304,805 handwritten letters. With a feather and special mix for ink, the scribe writes the five books of Moses on roughly 54 pieces of parchment. The average process takes over a year to produce the beautiful workmanship of a Torah Scroll.
When a scroll is completed it calls for great celebration by the city welcoming it to its new home – the Holy Ark in the Synagogue. All the Torah scrolls join the greeting procession as they accompany the dancing which begins from the street.
Coinciding with their 7th anniversary since coming to the Oyster Bay area – a new Torah Scroll will be completed by the Chabad Jewish Learning Center, a Jewish outreach, educational and social service organization. Participants of the celebration will help expert scribe Rabbi Gad Sebag of Brooklyn complete the final letters of this magnificent scroll.
Jewish tradition says that a new Torah is to be welcomed into a community just as one welcomes a bride and groom. Accordingly, the scroll will be carried under a wedding canopy during the procession to the Chabad House, and will be accompanied by a magnificent Torah Float with live music and dancing, before being placed in the Holy Ark at the Chabad House.
On Sunday, June 9 at 12:30 pm community leaders and Rabbis will join this exciting event beginning at Frances Drive and Route 106 in Muttontown. All are welcome to come join the celebration.
Your newsroom is welcome to come cover the story. This is a great photo opportunity.
