One of the things that you will not find a shortage of on Long Island is pizza places. There are literally hundreds of different pizza places in Nassau and Suffolk counties alone. It seems that everywhere you turn you are running into another Italian type of restaurant that specializes in the wonderful pie known as pizza. Not that I am complaining.
As a food writer I get the privilege of trying out my fair share of pizza places. When I was asked what my favorite pizza place on Long Island was, I had a hard time just narrowing it down to twenty let alone one! The list could actually be endless. Each place has its own character, flair, cooking technique, and general atmosphere that generally adds to the experience of the pizza pie itself. But, if I am truly hard pressed to choose my favorites it would boil down to these three.
Salvatore's Pizza is located on Shore Road in Port Washington and is simply divine. My mouth is watering just thinking about the incredible sausage pizza that I enjoy on each visit that comes out of the original coal fired oven. The crust is crunchy but also pliable and the correct amount of balanced toppings makes Salvatore's number one in my own personal pizza book.
Grana in Jamesport comes in a pretty close second. A more of a gourmet type of pie, the the supernal rosa bianca is made with local potatoes, red onions a rosemary and Parmesan cheese.
Lastly, in my top three pizza places has to be Grimaldi's in Garden City. Not only is the pie there amazing, but the general atmosphere and friendly service is a big reason it is so popular among Long Islanders.
