Cornell Poyser, 40, the assistant manager for a T.J. Maxx retail chain store in Oceanside, was caught by police driving away from the store with a van full of stolen designer goods. Poyser worked for five years at the T.J. Maxx store, but also operated a boutique in East Flatbush ,Brooklyn. He was able to sell designer clothes at his own store at knockoff prices because he was shoplifting them from the T.J. Maxx where he worked as an assistant manager. What he didn’t manage to sell at his local store, he sold online on eBay.
The total value of the goods that police recovered from his van and his boutique store totaled $130,000. Dresses he stole from T.J. Maxx which were originally marked at $90 were sold at his boutique for $10 or $15. Handbags marked $200 were also sold for a fraction of their true value. Customers who spoke to police said they assumed the products were knockoffs because of their low prices, and were surprised to learn they were real. Co-workers at T.J. Maxx were also shocked to hear the news, saying they had originally been told only that Poyser would no longer be working at the store. Poyser was arraigned on Thursday and is being held at Rikers Island on a $20,000 bail.
