In an economy that just continues to take the big hits, more news was released that was very somber for the people of New York State. A new report has been released that has some startling details about what could be a reality within a few years. This report states the possibility that up to 49,121 health care and related jobs could be lost in New York State by 2021. This loss of jobs is a result of the 2% sequester of Medicare spending mandated by the federal Budget Control Act of 2011.
And that isn't all. On a national level, more than 766,808 jobs would be lost according to the report released yesterday by the American Hospital Association, American Medical Association, and American Nurses Association. In a tremendous move, the Budget Control Act sequester forces incredibly deep cuts totaling $1.2 trillion from 2012 to 2021. These cuts become effective starting January 2, 2013. This drop in Medicare benefits will reduce Medicare payments to hospitals in New York by $2.4 billion over ten years.
Commenting about this report, HANYS’ President Daniel Sisto said, “The drastic Medicare cuts contained in the sequester must not stand. These reductions will further weaken an already struggling health care sector, and jeopardize patient access to care. As this report shows, the cuts would also have profound and far-reaching negative effects on employment—precisely what we do not need as our nation continues a slow, fragile economic recovery.”
The health industry, especially nurses, has always been the one sector which has remained strong. More and more people can find work in this industry when let go from other positions. However, with more than 450,000 jobs expected to be lost on the national level in this sector alone, the strength of the health industry is now at high risk.
