Long Island, NY –On Monday, June 10, 2013 the YMCA at Glen Cove, in collaboration with North Shore LIJ, conducted FREE Diabetes screenings to both members and non members. There were several individuals who showed signs of Diabetes or Prediabetes.
“Getting tested is the first step,” says Tina Graziose, YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program Regional Coordinator, “followed up with exercise, education and healthy lifestyle guidance. That’s how the Y can help.”
The Y will be following up with these individuals and will be offering consultations with our certified personal trainers and dieticians to guide them on the right track. If the individuals are non members, the Y will be extending a trial period where they can begin their exercise routine at the YMCA.
According to the state Department of Health, more than one million New Yorkers have been diagnosed with Diabetes, and an estimated 450,000 others have the disease, but don’t know it. The screening for Diabetes/Prediabetes consists of a simple blood test called an A1C.
