“Best Nursing Homes 2013” covers more than 15,000 nursing homes nationwide and highlights the top nursing homes in each state and nearly 100 major metropolitan areas. U.S. News awarded the “Best Nursing Home” designation to those that recently earned an overall rating of five stars from the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services which sets and enforces standards for nursing homes. Each is also rated separately on quality of care, health-inspections record and level of nurse staffing.
The Shores Care Center at Peconic Landing is among the only 18 percent of all nursing homes in New York to earn a five-star rating, the highest possible rating. The Shores has maintained a five-star rating for the past 16 consecutive quarters. Its rating can be viewed at

More than 3 million Americans will spend at least part of 2013 in a nursing home. “Using trustworthy data, we’ve built a consumer-friendly tool to help seniors and their families confront one of life’s most difficult and anxious transitions,” said U.S. News Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow. “Best Nursing Homes makes it easier for consumers to identify nursing homes that can best meet their needs in terms of location, quality of care, staffing and more.”
The Shores Care Center at Peconic Landing combines advanced medical technology and innovative best practices to create person-centered care focusing on each individual’s interests and preferences. A wide variety of programs and activities encourage engagement and social interaction. The secure, home-like environment allows residents to retain an independent lifestyle and maintain or improve their quality of life.
“We are proud to be recognized by U.S. News & World Report for the fourth consecutive year,” said Gregory Garrett, VP, Health Services and Administrator of Peconic Landing, a not-for-profit continuing care retirement community (CCRC) in Greenport. “I’m pleased to see our staff recognized for their commitment to care, quality and providing the best possible services to our residents and family members. We are dedicated to empowering residents to realize their full potential while maintaining their privacy, independence, security and peace of mind.”
President and CEO Robert J. Syron said Peconic Landing’s $45 million expansion announced earlier this year will feature – among other enhancements to its facilities, amenities and therapies – 16 new private skilled nursing accommodations in a “neighborhood model,” which includes a common area with country kitchen, dining area, great room and activity area. A 16-suite memory support assisted living wing for those with cognitive impairment will be set in a similar neighborhood style.
Peconic Landing is among about only 8 percent of CCRCs nationwide to earn accreditation as a CCRC and Person-Centered Long Term Care Community from CCAC-CARF, the industry rating agency. The Shores at Peconic Landing also has earned national recognition from CARF for quality programs and is the sole recipient of Person-Centered Long Term Care Community accreditation in the New York Metropolitan area.
