Stony Brook, N.Y. and New York, N.Y., May 29, 2013 – Harmony Vineyards, Long Island’s first waterfront winery, brings together music, art, literature and film to celebrate the best in rock culture to benefit The Long Island Music Hall of Fame. Beginning June 22 at 3 p.m., famed rock photographer Mark Weiss will be sharing the stories behind his photographs, amassed during his 35-year career. As a complement to the show, Weiss will introduce his collaboration with artist David Banegas who has been painting mirror images of Weiss’s iconic portraits, including David Lee Roth, Axl Rose and Debbie Harry. For more information go to www.WEISSGUYgallery.com and www.davidbanegas.com.
Mark Weiss was a 14 year old kid when he made a deal with a neighbor to cut his lawn in exchange for a 35 millimeter camera. By 16, he was sneaking into concerts to shoot rock icons such as Led Zeppelin, Queen and KISS, until he was arrested selling his photos outside of Madison Square Garden, and spent the night in jail. His peddling days over, Mark was at the beginning of a lifelong journey of rock & roll mayhem that continues to this very day. He landed a job as staff photographer at CIRCUS Magazine – the leading rock n’ roll publication at the time. In addition to his iconic images, Weiss is responsible for introducing Sebastian Bach to Skid Row and Zakk Wylde to Ozzy Osbourne. He has photographed countless tours including Van Halen, Guns N’ Roses, Motley Crue, Kiss and Bon Jovi, as well as multi-platinum album covers including Twisted Sister’s Stay Hungry and Bon Jovi’s Slippery When Wet.
“So much of rock music history stems from Long Island,” said David Acker, owner of Harmony Vineyards. “What better way to spend a summer day than to celebrate the artists and sounds on Stony Brook Harbor.”
“I love that Harmony Vineyards is celebrating not only rock music, but shining a light on Long Island’s own,” says Weiss.
Gary U.S. Bonds is known for the now legendary 1961 ‘party’ record, Quarter to Three. Gary recorded hit after hit with spirit and energy that would eventually inspire and influence a generation. Emerging back into the music scene in 1981, Gary once again saw success with the song “This Little Girl,” written by Bruce Springsteen for Bonds, which was on his album, Dedication – along with three other songs on the album that were arranged and produced by Springsteen and Steven Van Zandt. For more information visit: www.garyusbonds.com. Harmony Vineyards and Weiss are proud to share the event with world-renowned performer and hit songwriter, Gary U.S. Bonds, who will be on hand to sign copies of his latest memoir, By U.S. Bonds – That’s My Story, to be released June 5th. Weiss and Bonds share a long history beginning in 1981, when Mark photographed Gary at his home on Long Island for a spread in US Weekly, followed by the tour book for Gary’s hit record. In 2012, over three decades later, Mark would again photograph Gary for the cover of his autobiography.
Marking the return of warm weather, Harmony will also be adding the classic rock n’ roll culture film, American Graffiti to its Drink-In Movie series line-up, which will be screened on the side of the historical three-story house and tasting room. The 1973 coming of age film directed and co-written by George Lucas is a nostalgic portrait of rock and roll amongst the post-World War II baby boom generation and the perfect way to end the evening, passing up the popcorn for some of Harmony’s most praised wines.
Planted in 2002, Harmony Vineyards is Long Island’s first waterfront winery, 32.5 harbor-side acres only 70 minutes from Manhattan on scenic Stony Brook Harbor, the closest Long Island winery to Manhattan. Formerly known as East Farm and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, its centerpiece is the lovingly restored 1690 farmhouse and the site for many intriguing events, from art shows to its weekly outdoor “Drink-In Movie” screenings. Harmony Vineyards produces some of the area’s most praised wines, a full-bodied cassis-like cabernet sauvignon, mouth-filling chardonnay and a sultry Harmonious Red Blend, a hearty fusion of cabernet franc, merlot and cabernet sauvignon.
