Planning a huge party or barbecue, but not sure how you are going to afford wine for everyone? Second label wines may be the answer to your dilemma. Some Long Island vintners sell second-best wines under what is known as second-label programs and these wines are usually under $20 per bottle, which can be significant savings. While they do not meet the highest standards, they are suitable for casual consumption, which is perfect for barbecues or parties with lots of people.
Second label wines are for drinking and, at minimum, they are pleasurable, and are normally not too far off in quality from their superior siblings. Most people equate these second label wines with restaurant carafe wines, which are quite enjoyable for the most part, for drinking with your dinner.
The key to finding a second label wine that is to your liking is to look to the same vintner that makes your favorite higher-priced wines. This will give you some background to go on to find a wine that fits your tastes and your wallet. You can save as much as ½ off a bottle of wine just by going to a second label version and you may find almost the same taste and pleasure.
What exactly is a second label wine? In some vintners, it is a wine that is made with younger grapes than the high quality wine. Others use less than perfect blends or underperforming plots of grapes, while still others simply separate better performing barrels from others to be able to offer a less expensive wine option to consumers.
No matter which reason why a vintner offers a second label wine, it can be a great option as far as saving money if you are serving a large group of people in a more casual environment or event.
