St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center has joined with Intuitive Surgical to bring the da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System to Walt Whitman Mall in Huntington,New York. For one day only, September 16, 2012, the robot will be on display near center court.
“The da Vinci System has transformed the way minimally invasive surgeries are being performed by our physicians and we want to raise public awareness,” stated St. Catherine’s Vice President of Medical Staff Affairs and Chief Medical Officer, Patrick O’Shaughnessy, DO.
St. Catherine now offers robotic surgical options in the following areas: Bariatrics, General Surgery, Urology, Colon/Rectal and Gynecology. There are many advantages to robotic surgery including significantly less pain, fewer side effects, less scarring, shorter recovery period and faster return to normal activities.
The robot will be in the mall from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm. The public will have the opportunity to see how the robot works, test drive it and learn how it is used at St. Catherine. Physicians who specialize in robotic surgery will be available for questions at the display throughout the day. The following physicians will be participating at the Mall: Co-Directors of the Robotic Program, Dr. Nick Gabriel and Dr. Alexander Epelbaum, along with Dr. David Rivadeneira, Dr. Brian McKenna and Dr. Jill Genua.
The medical center will also be running a “Name the Robot” contest. The hospital is asking for the creative assistance of school aged children, K—12, to help name its da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System. The winner will receive a gift card and photo opportunity with the robot and physicians at the medical center on October 13, 2012 at St. Catherine’s Annual Health Fair.
