One of the ways that ogranizations can help within these economic times is to be a part of a movement. In this time that means helping out those who are struggling with finding food for their families. The organization Island Harvest is the largest relief organization on Long Island whose volunteers and staff “rescue,” or collect, good surplus food from over 800 local restaurants, caterers, farms, and other food-related businesses. They then distribute it to a network of close to 570 soup kitchens, food pantries, and other places where those in need can access it.
On October 23rd, Island Harvest and over 40 other Long Island restaurants will celebrate over 20 years of service with Taste of Harvest Celebration. The list of those participating restaurants is not limited to small establishments. Several premier dining places are scheduled to be a part of the celebration. Some of these include Bryant & Cooper Steakhouse, Cipollini, Cold Spring Harbor Country Club, Honu Kitchen & Cocktails, Jack Halyards American Bar & Grill, Mark of Excellence, Nisen Sushi, Tam O'Shanter Country Club and Zorn's. As these places come together for the celebration they will also be donating tons of food as a way to help Island Harvest provide for those who do not have.
The event, while a celebration of service, and a time to collect more food, will also contain several fun elements. One of the big draws of the occasion is a live auction. Among some of the items up for bid are Orchestra Seats for Two with Backstage Tour to "The Book of Mormon" and a Let's Go Knicks! package which includes four tickets to the Coca-Cola Suite at Madison Square Garden to watch the New York Knicks.
This year's Taste of the Harvest is being held at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury at 6 p.m. For anyone who is interested in more information, you can visit the Island Harvest website.
