With a sigh of relief, those who are looking for their daily dose of 32oz. soft drinks can still count on the Taco Bell at the Long Island College Hospital in Cobble Hill. It seems that the recent policy enacted by New York Mayor Bloomberg is not going to be enforced at the busy location at the university hospital.
But, it may only be a matter of time. The city’s Health Department has asked private health centers - including Wyckoff Heights Medical in Bushwick and Maimonides Medical Center in Borough Park - to follow public hospitals nixing the sale of candy bars, bottles of soda, and fattening meals. However, the officials have not asked the same of LICH. This means that all the wonderful "junk" food at the lobby's Taco Bell are still safe from the "junk food" police.
Facilities that are now following the Healthy Hospital Food Initiative program have meals that are 650 calories or less and desserts that are 250 calories or less. As far as the Taco Bell at LICH, that may be a little hard to comply with. At least until they find a way to control the fact that The Volcano Nachos, topped with cheese, beans, and beef, has 970 calories, and the Cantina Burrito has 760. Quite a bit more than the required calorie cap.
And it isn't just the patients who come to Long Island College Hospital that are glad the Taco Bell is safe for now. Some doctors are also quite pleased. One such 33 year old doctor said, “It’s cheap. They give us 10 minutes to eat.” Of course, this was being said as the doctor ate a single chicken taco with a 16-ounce Pepsi.
Hospital nutrionists, however, state the the patients within the hospital are on a strict diet that will help them recover or regain strength. What the visitors, or out-patients, eat is up to the many choices within the lobby.
