Washington, D.C. - March 28, 2017 - In what became the most critical moment of the 115th Congress to date, Congressman Tom Suozzi (D -- Queens, Long Island) stood strong against the Republican health care plan, which GOP leaders pulled from the House floor in the minutes leading up to the vote.
"This was bad legislation from the get-go and I'm glad to see that House Republicans finally realized that this was wrong for America. Now it's time to shift our attention toward producing bipartisan legislation that guarantees high quality, affordable health coverage for all Americans. I will continue working with my colleagues on the Problem Solvers Caucus to try and come up with commonsense solutions on health care and other important issues," said Congressman Suozzi.
Problem Solvers Caucus Meets with Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin
Pushing forward with their agenda of trying to improve the economy, Congressman Suozzi and Problem Solvers Caucus met privately with U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin. Suozzi serves as Vice-Chair of the caucus.
"This was a great opportunity for us start the dialogue of how to jump-start our economy and create good-paying jobs for the American people. Our caucus has been steadfast in our commitment to working with the Trump administration wherever we can find common ground. I enjoyed exchanging ideas with Secretary Mnuchin," remarked Congressman Suozzi.
Suozzi Joins Iraq’s Prime Minister for Roundtable Discussion
Congressman Suozzi also met with Iraq's Prime Minister, Haider al-Abadi during a House Foreign Affairs Committee roundtable discussion, where they discussed America's ongoing presence in Iraq and the steps that need to be taken to try and make the war-torn country more secure.
"While we talked a lot about the military aspects of what's happening on the ground, we also need to focus on building effective local governments that provide basic services. Tribalism, corruption and the constant threat of war make things more complicated, so this is something we'll need to keep our eye on moving forward."
Suozzi Takes Tough Stance on Global Ant-Semitism in Foreign Affairs Hearing
Congressman Suozzi took part in a Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on anti-Semitism in other parts of the world and the steps that must be taken to combat violence and threats against the Jewish community. His remarks can be seen here.
“The facts are that Jews have been persecuted for many years and we need to take action now, both here in America and around the world to put an end to this. This is an issue that’s deeply important to me and I’m going to keep fighting to protect my friends in the Jewish community,” said Suozzi.
Suozzi Presented Official Army Seal
Congressman Suozzi was also presented with the official seal of the Department of the Army. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, he will receive official seals from every department of America's armed forces.
"It was a great honor to be presented with this seal and it will hang proudly in my office. I'm here to make sure that our fighting men and women -- as well as our veterans -- have the tools they need to be successful both in battle and long after they finish serving their nation," said Congressman Suozzi.
