For a couple of weeks now, Long Island residents have been waiting for the outcome of a vote by the trustees of the State University of New York. The hospital itself is located in Brooklyn, but serves customers throughout Long Island. Many Nassau residents are within a half hour drive of the hospital, and rely on its medical services. Moreover, more than 2,000 Long Island residents work for the hospital and may soon lose their jobs.
Why is the hospital being closed? The university is in the midst of a financial crisis, which is taking a toll on the entire college, including its medical facilities. The hospital workers’ union still hasn’t given up hope, despite the unanimous vote by the 12 attending members to close the facility down. Union members plan to appeal to the State Health Department and the governor for assistance. The loss of the hospital in Brooklyn will lead to crowding in other medical facilities on Long Island, which may result in more casualties from heart attacks, injuries and illnesses. Even if there is a chance the hospital can still be saved, staff members will mostly likely start leaving as soon as they are able to find new jobs elsewhere, and patients on Long Island will likely start looking to other facilities for their medical treatments.
