Today, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo congratulated SUNY college on their National Innovation & Economic Prosperity Award from the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU). SUNY received the award in recognition of their endeavors to help bring economic prosperity to the region with projects such as START-UP NY. “…New York State is using our university system to innovate, develop new industries to grow the upstate economy, and most of all, create jobs,” stated Cuomo.
SUNY’s START-UP NY project has created tax-free communities around SUNY campuses for start-up businesses which fall within its guidelines. Employees operating in the START-UP zones pay no taxes on sales, property or business for ten years. Employees at these business do not pay income taxes for the first decade of business, which makes it much easier for companies working with tight budget constraints to grow and find opportunity. START-UP NY is SUNY’s best known project, but hardly their only contribution to the local economy. SUNY’s other endeavors include The SUNY Networks of Excellence, Technology Accelerator Fund (TAF), and The Innovation Keystone, among others. Each of these projects helps to support economic growth around SUNY campuses and throughout the state. “We will continue to use our world-class SUNY system as an innovative asset to attract private partnerships and investments, grow local economies across the state, and create jobs in New YorkState,” concluded Cuomo.
