SUFFOLK COUNTY SPCA CHARGES
EAST NORTHPORT COUPLE WITH ANIMAL CRUELTY
The Suffolk County SPCA has charged an East Northport couple with Misdemeanor Animal Cruelty for mistreatment of a 10 year old Greyhound canine named "Charlie" He was found roaming the streets in a thunderstorm on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 by a Good Samaritan. The Good Samaritan said that Charlie was so weak he had to be lifted into a van. The Good Samaritan took the Greyhound to an emergency veterinary clinic in Commack where it was treated for severe emaciation. According to the complainant, the veterinarian's office then contacted a Greyhound rescue organization. The organization stated that the Charlie is an ex-racing canine and has ear tattoos of specific numbers that identify that specific canine. Business records found that this Greyhound was one of their rescues. The dog had been adopted out to Stephen & Kathleen Jackman of 87 Lincoln Drive East Northport. Charlie weighed just 55lbs. on arrival at the emergency veterinary clinic.
Chief Roy Gross of the Suffolk County SPCA said that the veterinarian who treated Charlie said that his emaciated condition indicated many weeks of malnutrition.
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
