Concerned about the practices of pet stores in Suffolk County? Soon, there should be a great deal more transparency, thanks to the establishment of the Suffolk County Pet Store Rating Board by chairwoman Sara Davison of the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons and Suffolk County Legislator William R. Spencer. The program was created in response to legislation passed in 2011, and the board consists of established animal experts who can recognize healthy animals from unhealthy ones. Some are veterinarians, while others are animal welfare activists.
“As I sit here, I would once again encourage the pet stores of Suffolk County to join this great program,” stated Spencer. “Now that the Pet Store Rating Board has codified its rules and procedures and once the county pet stores have been rated, we will be able to say to potential pet owners: these are the practices of the pet stores in Suffolk County.” Stores which receive approval from the board will be able to display a certificate in their windows. Those which are not approved once they apply will have thirty days to correct problems which are discovered by the board and re-apply for approval. This should help customers to shop at stores which treat animals with respect and ensure that they are happy, healthy, and humanely kept
