Suffolk County Offering Free Rabies Vaccinations

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services (SCDHS) has just announced they will be offering free rabies vaccinations for local pets in conjunction with the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons (ARF).  Vaccinations will be available for dogs, cats, and ferrets, and will be offered on Saturday, the 5^th of April, at the Riverhead Polish Hall at 214 Marcy Avenue.  The event will take place between 11 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon as is available to all residents of Suffolk county on a first-come, first-serve basis. 

Residents who come to the free vaccination event will need to ensure that their dogs are on leashes and that all cats and ferrets are in carriers.  It is the law in New York State that all dogs, ferrets, and cats be vaccinated against this dangerous disease.  Doing so protects other pets, wild animals, and human beings.  Thankfully very few animals in the area have tested positive for rabies.  The SCDHS found 3 bats last year which tested positive, and 19 raccoons between 2006 and 2009.  By coming to this free event, pet owners are complying with the law and also helping to keep Long Island a safe, rabies-free environment for pets and their owners as well as local wildlife.
