The Suffolk County Historical Society has a brand new exhibit featuring artifacts from four nomadic tribes from different parts of the world. But you cannot see the exhibit at the society’s Riverhead museum; the exhibit, like the artifacts it features, is nomadic, and will be traveling around Suffok County in a 37 year old Winnebago. The Winnebago features 250 feet of space for the exhibit, and will travel to various schools and events so that people all over the county can check out the artifacts.
“The Moveable Museum program will allow us to bring educational programming from the (historical society) out to the community in a fun, interactive and instructive manner,” stated executive director Kathryn Curran. “It is a bridge to communities and neighborhoods.” One of the reasons that the mobile museum is such a great invention is that a lot of schools are unable to afford field trips with the current tight budget faced by Long Island schools. With the Moveable Museum, the museum can come to the school, giving children the chance to see the artifacts even though the schools cannot afford to send them to the society’s museum on field trips.
