Winter Storm Nemo’s wrath during rush hour on February 8th left roads closed for days. Some drivers were stranded in their vehicles for up to 12 hours and others abandoned their cars. Hundreds of snowplows were brought in from other parts of New York. All of this left Suffolk County and its residents out money that they could not afford.
A disaster declaration was authorized by President Obama to help take some of the sting out of the financial ramifications of Nemo. This declaration makes Suffolk County residents and government agencies eligible for assistance from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
“Suffolk County bore the worst of the storm’s impact on New York,” said U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, who co-wrote a request to the president with U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer. “Residents throughout Suffolk County and New York should not be left shouldering all of these costs alone.”
Winter Storm Nemo brought the most snowfall in the Town of Brookhaven. Residents there were very critical of the response of their municipality. Roads were closed for days and many feel as if the town was not prepared.
This help from FEMA is going to go a long way to taking some of the sting out of Winter Storm Nemo’s financial repercussions.
