Deer Park, NY - June 9th, 2015 - Suffolk County will present its second annual School Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) award to the Deer Park School District on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. The SHARP program awards schools that have adopted and implemented exemplary wellness policies and activities to promote health and wellness in the school environment and in the community.
“The Deer Park School District has earned the Suffolk County SHARP award for its commitment to promoting healthy lifestyle choices,” said County Executive Steve Bellone.” This commitment is consistent with our Healthy Suffolk campaign to improve health outcomes for all residents of Suffolk County.”
“Obesity and chronic disease are growing problems in Suffolk County and across the nation,” said Dr. James Tomarken, Commissioner of Health Services. “The SHARP Award Committee was highly impressed by the Deer Park School District’s comprehensive Wellness Policy and the Annual Health & Wellness Fair, which promotes healthy choices among the community.”
The Suffolk County Department of Health Services, in collaboration with the Long Island Health Collaborative, initiated the SHARP award as a component of its Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) 2014-2017. The objective of the CHIP is to partner with community agencies and develop and monitor programs to improve the quality of health of the community.
