This weekend, a recovered porpoise named Noodle was released off the coast of Long Island. The porpoise somehow managed to become stranded off of the coast of New Brunswick, Maine last October. When Noodle was discovered by officials, he was ferried off to the Riverhead Foundation in Long Island for rehabilitation. Noodle had lungworm and was underweight, and was so weak that he was unable to float without the help of foam noodle flotation devices, which was how he came to be known as Noodle.
Noodle’s rescuers have finally declared him healthy enough to return to life in the wild, and released him off the Long Island coast this weekend. Noodle is equipped with a tracking device so that scientists and members of the public can keep track of his progress and safety. Noodle currently weighs 70 pounds, having gained back 15 pounds since scientists began taking care of him and helping him to regain his strength and mobility. Now Noodle is ready for life in the wild once more. Members of the public who are interested in seeing porpoises and other sea life and reptiles should consider a day trip to one of Long Island’s aquariums this spring or summer.
