On the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, a lot of New Yorkers are looking back on the past year and marking the damage the storm left behind—and the progress which Long Islanders have made since in repairing that damage and moving forward. One area where the progress can be seen is the real estate market. Many homes, especially beachfront properties, were damaged during the storm. Now real estate agents are beginning to list beachfront properties once again, including homes that were damaged by the superstorm. While many have opted to stay in their renovated homes, others are placing them on the market once again.
Some of the homes have had floors and roofs replaced. Others have been bolstered against future flooding, and are now safer to live in than before. So renovations have not only made these homes more beautiful, but also have imbued them with more practical value. Justin Galbraith of Eric G. Ramsay Jr. Associates realtor noted, “The storm affected so many people, it made a statement. Living near the water is more safe now and more protected than it has ever been. God forbid there is another one, everyone will be ready for it.”
