New York Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci joined with members of the Assembly Minority delegation today to ask Governor Cuomo to consider boosting the finances delegated to public schools on Long Island. Lupinacci’s plan calls for an increase amounting to an average of $66.00 more per student. Even with the funding boost, the average student would receive far less money than the statewide average, which is currently $119. Funding for students in New York City is even higher, averaging out to $129 per student. Along with the members of the Assembly, school and parent interest groups showed up at the rally to ask for more funding. Notable appearances included Jim March, President of the Nassau-Suffolk School Board Association, and David Bennardo, Superintendent for South Huntington School District.
Funding public education is just one of the many challenges which are facing Long Island officials in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. “As someone who has spent the past eight years trying to balance the rising cost of education from the top down,” says Lupinacci, “I can assure you our current system is broken … shipping our hard-earned tax dollars away from Long Island doesn’t help anyone … Without reform of the current system, students and residents across Long Island will continue to suffer with an unfair and burdensome system.”
