Next Sunday, March 17th, a week from today, is St. Patrick’s Day. St. Patrick’s Day has always been a big deal on Long Island. In Suffolk and Nassau counties, it is more than just one day: it is a whole month of celebrations, parties and parades. If you want to enjoy traditional Irish festivities, bagpipe players, fire trucks, candy, and other fun activities, then you will want to attend one or more of the events listed below!

Each of these parades includes fun activities for the whole family, and a chance to learn more about Irish heritage. Who was Saint Patrick? Born in the late 4th century, Saint Patrick was an Irish missionary who was well known for spreading his faith. Irish settlers who celebrated Saint Patrick’s Day in Europe brought their customs with them when they immigrated to America, where the holiday became even more popular. The first ever Saint Patrick’s Day parade was not even held in Ireland, but in New York City in the year 1762. So these parades on Long Island have a very rich history!
