Smithtown, NY - October 15th, 2015 - St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center held its annual Breast Cancer Survivor dinner on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at the Stonebridge Country Club in Smithtown. Survivors gathered with their family and health care professionals from St. Catherine of Siena that has been with them on their road to recovery.
According to the American Cancer Society, excluding cancers of the skin, breast cancer is the most common cancer among US women, accounting for 29% of newly diagnosed cancers. And, men are generally at low risk for developing breast cancer; however, they should report any change in their breasts to a physician.
St. Catherine’s Director of Community Relations Heather Reynolds moderated the evening, and welcomed survivors and their guests. The evening was uplifting with a survivor testimonial given through inspirational song. And, there was a glorious moment when all the survivors stood together and sang in one strong accord, “I will survive”—the evening highlight. Survivors were given free pink hair extensions and mini-makeovers.
“We hope to remain a strong system of support for you,” said St. Catherine Senior Vice President of Clinical Services and Chief Nursing Officer Gara Edelstein. She expressed how each survivor inspired her and said, “A positive attitude is good medicine.”
The evening was hosted by St. Catherine of Siena with support from the following sponsors: St. Catherine’s Admitting Department, Meiling Alsen, Anything In A Basket, Bliss Acupuncture, Borella’s Farm Stand, Changes Salon, Chanel, Clinique, Court St. Gerard - Catholic Daughters, CSI SALON, Anne Green, MD, LANCÔME, Ray Lani, June Lee, MD, Legends Salon, Lord & Taylor, Ilene Mauner, Platinum Fitness Gym, Regina Rossi, Revlon Cosmetics, Vera Bradley and Diana Yoon-Schwartz, MD.
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime—and mammography remains the best method for early detection.
