Smithtown, New York— St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center has once again earned an “A” on a national safety score that rates hospitals on the quality of their care. The letter-based rating system was devised by The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organization that ranks hospitals nationwide. St. Catherine was one of only five hospitals on Long Island to “ace” the test and was joined by two other Catholic Health Services of Long Island (CHS) hospitals, Good Samaritan and
St. Francis Hospital.
“The Leapfrog Hospital Survey assesses hospital performance based on national performance measures. The measures cover a broad spectrum of hospital services, processes and structures, and also provide hospitals with the opportunity to benchmark the progress they are making in improving the safety, quality, and efficiency of the care they deliver,” said Michelle Goldfarb, RN, MBA, CPH, St. Catherine’s Vice President, Quality, Patient Safety and Risk, HIPAA Privacy Officer.
The rankings rely on data from Leapfrog’s own ratings as well as outside sources including the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Joint Commission. Grades range from “A” to “F” based on 26 safety indicators. The criteria range from specific measures such as whether patients received an antibiotic within an hour of surgery to more general standards such as the success of “teamwork training and skill building”.
The Leapfrog Group (www.leapfroggroup.org) is a national nonprofit organization using the collective leverage of large purchasers of health care to initiate breakthrough improvements in the safety, quality and affordability of health care for Americans. The flagship Leapfrog Hospital Survey allows purchasers to structure their contracts and purchasing to reward the highest performing hospitals. The Leapfrog Group was founded in November 2000 with support from the Business Roundtable and national funders, and is now independently operated with support from its purchaser and other members.
